Money and Salary.com Name the Top Jobs

Money magazine and Salary.com have released a list of the 50 best career fields for American workers today. Their criteria include an above-average job growth rate, annual pay above $50,000, flexible hours, good work environments, and opportunities for advancement.

Here are the top 10 jobs on the Money/Salary.com list – with our comments on some of the choices.

  1. Software Engineer – We agree, it's great work – but not the best choice if job stability is your top concern.
  2. College Professor – Don't go down this track unless 1) You're prepared to get 10 years of post-secondary education just to get your foot in the door, and 2) you're willing to spend your first years (and maybe more) teaching at the Middle of Nowhere State University.
  3. Financial Advisor
  4. Human Resources Manager
  5. Physician Assistant – Other health specialties that made the top 50 list are physical therapist, chiropractor, medical scientist, physician, surgeon, biomedical research scientist, dentist, registered nurse, and veterinarian.
  6. Market Research Analyst
  7. Computer/IT Analyst
  8. Real Estate Appraiser – If you're already in this field, enjoy things while they last. If you're not, think twice about getting in. Demand for this specialty will drop like a stone as mortgage rates rise and housing sales slow down.
  9. Pharmacist
  10. Psychologist – Much of the projected job growth here comes from a growing demand for school psychologists. You'll need at least a master's degree to qualify for employment.
