April 11, 2008 Transitioning to Part-Time Work
If you are like a growing number of workers, you may want to stay at your current company, but transition to fewer hours in search of a better work-life balance. Increasingly, employers are becoming open to retaining valued employees, even if that means being able to tap into a lesser amount of their talent due to their diminished work hours. Quite simply, it’s much more cost effective to retain a valued employee who understands the processes and fits the system than to train someone new and hope that individual works out.
If you’re considering a move to part-time work, it may be worthwhile to explore the opportunities available to you with your current employer. “The key to a successful transition is to approach your supervisor or HR representative and explain the benefits of your continued part-time work to the company and not give a long talk about why it’s best for you and how you just don’t want to keep the same level of work hours. You will be much more successful in your pitch if you tailor it to the employer’s perspective,” states All Star Resume Consultant
Judy Favia.
