Before and After Cover Letter and Resume: Check out the results of
a skilled rewrite!
We took a job seeker's cover letter and resume and put it in the hands of one of our career consultants who on a daily basis reviews several resumes. She knows what a difference effective, concise writing can make. She also understands the impact organized material can have when formatted professionally. Just look below
at a sample of the first section of resume (links to full
versions of the before and after are included at the bottom of
the page). Notice how our career consultant turned a
weak, uncompelling career objective into an eye-grabbing career profile section that put the applicant's skills at the top:
BEFORE
Objective:
To obtain a mid-level position in the program, public, service or project management industry in the Baltimore, Maryland area.
AFTER
Professional Profile:

By organizing the material, and deleting non-essential information, such as the applicant's job-location preference (a hiring manager will probably assume that the job's location is fine with you if you are applying there), you can dramatically improve the impact of your resume. Don't put yourself in a vulnerable position by asking decision makers to search out your skills with a poorly organized resume, they probably don't have the time and will turn their attention to resumes that clearly demonstrate an applicant's potential to meet the job's requirements.
