When Your Boss is not a Viable Recommender
When searching for a new job, it's
essential to have good references from previous employers, but
sometimes securing those references can be a little tricky.
Maybe you were dismissed from your old job; or maybe you're
still employed and don't want your current boss to know you're
looking elsewhere. In either case, it's still possible to obtain
good references.
Even if your boss let you go from your job,
you may be able to negotiate a reference as part of the terms of
your departure. Remind your supervisor of the positive things
you've accomplished at the company. He may be willing to provide
a reference as a conciliatory measure for firing you.
You can also ask for references from former
supervisors. Perhaps the person your current boss replaced
thought highly of your work. If you haven't kept in touch,
reopen the lines of communication. Former bosses can be a great
asset.
You may also be able to get good references
from other people within the company. Seek out possible allies,
such as the supervisor of another department whom you helped
with some projects or other co-workers who might side with you
instead of your boss.
Also consider outside sources with whom you
developed positive relationships. Perhaps you worked closely
with a client or vendor who has good things to say about you. A
reference other than a supervisor can also offer insight into
how you interact with others and give a different perspective on
your abilities.
Finally, the human resources department can
verify your employment. Sometimes, a potential employer simply
wants to confirm your title, length of employment, or salary,
and many companies have policies prohibiting HR representatives
from releasing any other information.
Regardless of whom you list as a reference,
make sure to first ask whether that person is willing to provide
a reference for you so that he or she doesn't get caught off
guard. If you act professionally and politely, you should be
able to obtain references who will help you get the job you
seek.
