March 11, 2008 February Labor Report Reveals Increase in Hourly Earnings and Health Care Employment
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor
Employment Situation Summary, average hourly earnings rose by 5 cents, or 3.0
percent over the month of February. Over the past 12 months, both average hourly
earnings and weekly earnings rose by 3.7 percent.
Health care employment has been steadily growing this year with 36,000 new hires
in February. Job growth primarily took place in hospitals and in ambulatory
health care services, which includes offices of physicians.
Some of the professions that did not fair as well included construction, retail,
and manufacturing. Construction has trimmed 331,000 jobs since it’s most recent
peak in September 2006, let alone the 39,000 construction employees lost in
February alone.
