The Trend Towards Self Employed Independent Sales Agents
We've spoken with what seems to be more people than usual lately who want to leave their sales jobs and become
independent sales agents. And why not? It isn't like you have a lot more job security as an employee these days.
This can certainly be an exciting and promising career opportunity if you have the right skills set. However, we
only recommend this to individuals with previous sales experience in that industry or sector. Even if you know
independent sales agents who make all or most of their income off one product, we still normally recommend representing
at least three different companies for diversification reasons.
We also caution that it's a bit different to be self employed and it's certainly not for everyone. In addition to what
your self employed friends can tell you, the culture of a company that uses outside reps instead of their own sales force
tends to be significantly different.
