Job Hop to the Top!
Long gone are the days of remaining with the same employer for your entire 40-year work life. With the way the economy changes so rapidly, there's a good chance your current company won't be around in 40 years anyway. Along with the recognition of this trend, employers have come to value the diversity of perspectives and talent that come from outside their own organization. All of this means that it's becoming more common – and more necessary – to "job hop" your way to the executive office.
Here are a few helpful tips we’ve put together with help from our resume counselors:
Know where you want to go. This requires solid, well-thought-out career planning. The executives you look up to didn’t get into their current positions due to dumb luck.
Befriend your boss. Who knows your strengths and weaknesses better than your current supervisor? If you offer to take on more responsibilities and help make your boss look better, chances are strong you will be aptly rewarded.
Always put forth your best effort. Organizations reward their hardest workers.
Consider job rotations and other lateral moves. The additional perspective you gain from such moves can often give you the well-rounded "big picture" you will need to earn a place in the executive office suites.
