Job outlook good for recent college
grads and can improve with networking
The outlook is good for college graduates bound for the workplace, says a recent report in The Wall Street Journal's Career Journal Online. Some tried-and-true tips for starting the search are:
- Network with any willing parties, including friends,
former classmates, and family members. In the process,
seek out opportunities to expand this group by meeting with
friends of friends. Listen to what people have to say and be sure to share
details about what you are seeking, such as the industries you'd like to work
in, geographic area where you'd like to work and the type of position you feel
prepared to take on.
- If you know you'd like to work in a certain city or region, be willing to travel there for exploration. Call employers there, let them know you'll be visiting the area soon and request informational interviews.
- Be flexible. While no one wants to dig ditches after four years of college, don't be surprised if your first job is an entry-level position with salary to match. One career coach drove home the point that your first job is indeed just that, your first job. And the work
world is, after all, a great crash course in the reality of what it takes to advance in any field.
- Don't decree failure if you're not employed by summer's end. It can take a while for the right opportunity to come along, yet it's bound to happen if you are enterprising in your search.
