Are You Comfortable You Can Choose a Reputable Employer?

It's the time of the year when recent college graduate begin entering the job market in mass. Often times, these newly minted graduates will decline job offers because they are not sure the prospective employer is "reputable."

Accordingly, we have decided to dedicate this blog entry to help such job seekers with a few common rules of thumb:

1. Does the employer ask you to pay them a fee of any kind? If the answer to this is "yes," we encourage you to run -- not walk -- away.

2. Do you understand the employer's business model? Does it make sense? Can you see the value they offer their clients? Does it seem sustainable for at least a reasonable enough length of time to allow you to get some quality work experience?

3. How long has the company been around? There are some old companies that may be reaching the end of their life cycle and some brand-new start up that might become the next Google. However, if the company has a track record for paying employee salaries, office rent, etc, that should be viewed as a good sign.

4. What 'vibe' did you pick up from speaking to the employees? If you didn't get a chance to meet the other employees, this should make you suspicious. How long has the average employee been with the company? Do they seem happy and content?
