Research Your Career Options
Some people know what career they want to
move into. They may be realizing a dream they've had since
childhood, or have finally hit on the type of work that is
absolutely, unequivocally what they should do with their lives.
For others of us, it's not so easy. We may have an idea of what we want to do, but aren't sure exactly what occupations would
let us do it. We may not even be sure what vocations exist outside of those we're familiar with through our own experience and
that of our families and friends.
No matter which of these two positions you find yourself in, you need to do research. Even if you know what career you want to move into, you
need find out what you need to do to get your foot in the door. And if you don't yet know what career you may want to change over to, research is the best
thing you can do to help yourself arrive at a decision.
Here are some things you can do to research your career change:
-
Assess your skills – There are many books, Web sites, and programs that can help you identify what
you do well and what you most enjoy doing. Start by
checking the Internet and your local public library.
See if local schools or organizations offer career counseling.
-
Explore career fields – There are also many resources that will help you get an idea of the many
careers available to you. Again, start by
checking the Internet and your local public library. Don't forget the employment ads in your local newspaper, either – they can give you
an idea of the
kinds of work available in your area. And don't forget to simply talk to people.
-
Start keeping a career change journal – Start a notebook with a list of jobs that appeal to you.
Include notes on what you do and don't
like about each field, what qualifications are needed to enter the field, what pay you could expect, etc. Having this information together, in one place,
will make it easier for you to compare your options and make a decision when the time comes.
