Assessing Your Interest in a Career Change

Understanding why you are thinking about changing careers is a crucial first step in any career change process.

Ask yourself these questions:

• What am I unhappy about in my current work?

• Could I change what I'm unhappy about without changing jobs?

• Would I be happy doing the same job, but for a different employer?

• Would I be happy staying with the same employer, but doing a different job?

• What skills and knowledge do you have that you could transfer to another profession or field?

• Would you be willing to go back to school, or take training courses?

• Would you be willing to do volunteer work or unpaid internships, to gain experience and references?

• Would you be willing to work part-time?

• If you won the lottery and never had to work again in your life, what would you spend your time doing? What kind of work would let you do that same thing?
